Upon your digging into the internet, you will likely find very mixed reviews about Egypt as a travel destination, as we did. It is on many people who will likely never actually go there’s bucket list thanks to the allure of the mysterious and stunning history. People who do go seem to either love it or hate it, and I understand why. It isn’t necessarily an easy trip, and you’ve got to know what you’re in for. First of all, it is hot… Like… Really hot. When we were in the southern part of the country, it was above 110 degrees fahrenheit the entire time we were there, and one day it hit 117. If you can handle that, I highly recommend doing some kind of cruise up the Nile. They are relatively cheap, and it is a very cool experience. The infrastructure is a bit of a mess throughout the country, but in a very characteristic, lovely way (most of the time). The point is, you can’t expect things to always go the way you planned them, because in all likelihood, they will not. Egyptians are wonderful people. From our experience, they’re warm, mostly friendly, helpful, and very smart people. We made some incredible friends very quickly and the highlight of our whole experience in the country was spending time with them playing card games in unassuming little cafes. Cairo has beautiful mosques, forts, castles, of course pyramids, and labyrinths of streets to wander. We felt very safe, but I did become wary of scams by the end. It began to feel like anything involving the transfer of currency was sketchy in some way. This likely stems partly from the difference of how Americans view commerce. In the west, there is a price, and there is almost no negotiation or play. I’ve been a lot of places where haggling is the norm, but Egypt is a different animal. All of the caveats in mind, Egypt is an experience like no other. The history, the people, the architecture, the Nile, it is a land of enchantment under a scorching sun.
